WORK PERMITS

Obtain a Work Permit in Canada
Work is an activity for which wages are paid or commission is earned. A work permit is therefore a written authorization that allows you to work in Canada. In order to obtain a work permit, you need to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

LMIA is a document ssued from Employment and Social Development Canada, stating its opinion about allowing an individual to work legally in Canada for a specific employer. You can also obtain a work permit if you have an employment offer from an LMIA-exempt employer. Exempt from LMIA are:

  • Positions included in International Agreements
  • Positions that address Canadian interests
  • People who have no other means of support
  • Permanents residence applicants in Canada
  • Humanitarian reasons
